All About Berkshire County
One of the most scenic and historic parts of the nation, Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts has been a favored destination since the founding of the Republic and even before. This is a region whose past is replete with momentous happenings, whose present is dynamic and progressive and whose future is brimming with promise.
Situated north of Connecticut and south of Vermont, this tranquil and splendid natural setting has provided a colorful canvas for history-in-the-making right from colonial times. Not only did the Berkshires play an important part during the days of the American War of Independence, the region has also played a pivotal role in the making of modern day United States.
Settlement began here in the 1700s with Dutch colonialists. Since then, many legendary American statesmen, writers, artists and inventors have called the Berkshires home. The region saw its heyday during the Gilded Age, which inaugurated the railroad era, when many prominent Americans set up lavish country homes in the Berkshires.
Today, the beauty of the changing seasons, charming accommodation and hospitable people makes the Berkshires a much-loved place. The region is equidistant from New York (120 miles south-west) and Boston (120 miles east).
