The first settlers arrived here in 1757 and the town was incorporated in 1779. The town had a reputation for lawlessness in the early years. Today Mount Washington is the most sparsely populated town in the state with the best-educated residents. Mt Everett, the second highest peak in the state, is in its vicinity. It is ideal for naturalists looking out for pristine territory.
The town is residential and has no commercial or industrial enterprises. It is located at 1,661 feet above sea level.
