Towns-Florida
Profile
First settled in 1783, it was incorporated in 1805. On the summit of Green Mountain, Florida was once a staging site for the Hoosac Tunnel. It turned into a boomtown when the Hoosac Tunnel was being constructed. It is supposed to have been named Florida as the topic of conversation at the time was the acquisition of Florida State from the Spanish. Agriculture is the chief occupation here.
At 2,180 feet above sea level, Florida offers fine scenic views of all the surrounding peaks in the Berkshires. Anglers are drawn here for the fishing. The Mohawk Trail passes near town.
