Great Barrington-Attractions

Housatonic River Walk

Enjoy the beautiful community walking trail that was launched as part of the project to clean up the Housatonic River. This community project which began in 1988 has set an example of environmental conservation in the area.

Searles’ Castle

A 48-room mansion designed in the French chateau style. Built in 1887 by Edward Searles. It’s a town landmark.

Brightside

A grand Italianate mansion built in 1859. It was here that the young DuBois spent much of his time studying. It belonged to a prominent family, the Russells.

Aston Magna Festival

Devoted to concerts of chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Performances are held in summer and winter. Period instruments are used.

Stockbridge Chamber Concert

Summer performances at Searles’ Castle. The Boston Symphony Orchestra performs here too.

Simon’s Rock College of Bard

Founded in 1966 by visionary teacher Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, it is the only 4-year college in the country to offer a liberal arts and sciences curriculum for younger scholars of 15 or 16. It is located on Alford Road.

Butternut Basin

Two miles east of town, it is on Route 23. Offers great skiing and snowboarding on 22 trails.
