A quiet little town which was founded in 1756 in honor of John Alford who founded the Alford professorship in Harvard University. It still remains a rural backwater with no stores, motels, hotels or gas station. Agriculture was and is the main pursuit of the people here. It had and has little industry. Marble became the major export in the early 1800s. Its buildings are all historic.
Main Street has a town hall, church and a one-room school. Historic Union Church on Main Street was built in 1817. The principal highway that passes through Alford is State Route 71. The closest large town is Great Barrington
